Voter Registration

Washington College actively promotes voter registration. The College is responding to a mandate of the reauthorization of the federal Higher Education Act, which requires that colleges and universities make a good-faith effort to provide voter registration forms to all students. Registering and voting are actions of an informed citizenry.

In order to register to vote, an individual must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old at the time of the next election.  Many college students may not be aware that they may register to vote in one of two places:  in their college communities, where they will use a voting machine (must show proof of Maryland residency); or in their hometown, typically via absentee ballot.  Any member of the Washington College community who wishes to register and vote in the state of Maryland may obtain a form for this purpose online at www.elections.state.md.us, at the Registrar’s Office, or the Kent County Board of Election Supervisors.  Forms to register in other states and deadlines may also be obtained at the Registrar’s Office or the Kent County Board of Election Supervisors.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Deadlines to register differ from state to state. For information on registration deadlines, visit the Board of Elections website in your home state. Forms to register and state deadlines may also be obtained at the Registrar’s Office or the Kent County Board of Election Supervisors.
