Student Opportunities
With our location so close to the Chestertown arts and entertainment district, there are plenty of opportunities for our students to get involved in what interests them on and off campus. Take advantage of internships, research, artist talks, gallery exhibits, public art, and more in our community.
Find the Perfect Opportunity

Internships
- Gain experience with the curatorial process by working in Kohl Gallery, our on-campus gallery space for contemporary art.
- Earn a paid internship at a regional or national museum such as the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery or American Art Museum through the Explore America Summer Intership Program.
- Earn an editorial position on one of our student publications, Collegian literary magazine, The Elm newspaper, or Pegasus yearbook.
- Take advantage of the local arts community of Chestertown, working with the Public Art Committee, Kent Cultural Alliance, or one of several local galleries.
- Arrange your own internship experience through your own connections, or by tapping into the Center for Career Development's extensive network.

Research
-
Participate in field trips to meet with artists in their studios, see galleries, or visit major collections in the region. We regularly visit galleries and museums in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.
-
Complete a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE) creating a body of work for exhibition in Kohl Gallery. Spend your senior year in your own studio space creating and experimenting, then learn the process of exhibiting a show from start to finish. With the other seniors in your cohort, and under direction from art department faculty and the director of the gallery, you will create all the components needed for your show from installing the work to selecting titles to creating marketing materials to writing remarks for a short artist talk at the opening.
-
Exhibit your work in 100 Proof, the annual student juried exhibition in Kohl Gallery.
-
Develop your curatorial vision working as an assistant in Kohl Gallery, or curate your own exhibition from start to finish as a pop-up in the art department's satellite space.
- Create your own research project. Support, financial or otherwise, is available across campus, including through the Hodson Collaborative Research Program or the Cater Society for Junior Fellows.
To get started thinking about what research you might be able to do at Washington College, review our faculty's areas of expertise.
