Facilities

Washington College art students have access to to studio and gallery spaces on campus and in Chestertown. These spaces make the College a vibrant visual arts community, and provide opportunities for our students to learn, play, experiment, and display their work.

Studio Spaces

Larabee Studio Arts Center

Studio art courses are taught in the bright, airy Larrabee Studio Arts Center, where you'll have 24-hour access to studio facilities as part of your coursework. These large classroom spaces provide ample room for students to learn, work, and display projects. With easels, drying racks, paper rolls, large sinks, and more, students have the tools they need to work on what interests them. The arts center also includes equipment students have access to, including vinyl cutters, paper cutters, tools, and more. Students also learn how to return the space to a blank canvas, by repairing holes, spackling, and painting when necessary.

Senior Studios

Located on the edge of campus by the campus garden, the senior studio building provides studio art majors a dedicated, private space to experiment and work on their Senior Capstone Experience (SCE).

The Art House

Next to the senior studio building, the Art House provides additional studio art teaching space, currently used for sculpture classes.

Gallery Spaces

Kohl Gallery

Kohl Gallery is Washington College's flagship venue for visual arts programming. Located in the Gibson Center for the Arts, Kohl Gallery fosters the study and understanding of art through a diverse range of exhibitions and public programs. Embracing its liberal arts context, Kohl Gallery presents fresh perspectives on historical and contemporary art and promotes interdisciplinary conversations about historical, social, and cultural issues of significance to Washington College, the Chestertown community and beyond.

Kohl Gallery presents at least two shows per semester, featuring historical and contemporary artists as well as student work.  The annual 100 Proof exhibit presents artwork by Washington College students at all levels of study, while the spring Senior Capstone Experience exhibit presents a fully-developed body of work by each graduating Studio Art senior.

Pop-up Galleries and Performances

Studio Art students regularly organize creative exhibits and presentations of their works, both on and off campus. Recent examples include a faculty studio turned into a temporary gallery, a student-organized performance art "happening," and a campus-wide pop-up art tour.
