
Department of Education
The Education Department is characterized by a highly nurturing and personalized environment and intellectual rigor within a liberal arts context.
The Education Department offers an interdisciplinary major or minor in Education Studies; as well as minors in Museum, Field, and Community Education; Coaching; and School Counseling; and two teacher certification programs.
Learning Goals:
At the end of their course of study, our students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of social, cultural, psychological, philosophical, and historical foundations of education (and their applications to practice)
- integrate and apply knowledge of human development across the fields of anthropology, education, psychology, and sociology
- use content knowledge to design, evaluate, and interpret field experiences
communicate effectively in a variety of formats and media
display global consciousness and cultural sensitivity as emerging leaders -
demonstrate core teacher competencies as defined by the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).**
Program Features:
- Field work—early and often—in diverse locations
- Multidisciplinary liberal arts foundation culminating in field-based, independent research study
- Can lead to teacher certification (by program application) and includes a full-year teaching internship

Washington College’s Education Studies major takes a liberal arts approach to preparing future educators—our students take foundational courses in education while also exploring human development and learning through the lenses of psychology, anthropology, and sociology

Your career as a teacher can begin immediately after you graduate, thanks to our teacher certification programs. With certifications in either elementary education or secondary education, you will gain the skills and confidence needed for your own classroom.
