Business Management Major

Maybe you have the passion to be an entrepreneur, or to launch a career in finance or marketing. Maybe you want to use the power of business to make the world a better place. Or maybe you’re not sure what your passion exactly is, but you know you’ll need in-demand skills and practical experience while you explore. Whatever moves you, and wherever you’re going, the Business Management major will help you figure it out, get going, and build success.

We help our students develop a values-based, ethical approach to the study of business. We believe businesses don’t exist simply to make money, but to solve problems and add value to the world. Our students consider business within the spheres of global and ethical responsibility and take a shareholder approach to understanding the role of businesses within our society. Our graduates enter the business world bringing curiosity, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate and collaborate in teams.

Alongside courses and programs in areas like finance, marketing, management, information systems, strategy, international business, and ethics and social responsibility, business management students do a lot of hands-on, experience-based learning—in class projects, internships, individual research, and short- and long-term study abroad. You’ll learn how to read balance sheets and income statements, how to design and execute a marketing campaign, and how to use tech tools like SAP and Bloomberg terminals. You’ll meet outstanding business leaders, so you can connect classroom concepts and activities with real-time strategy and innovation. For your Senior Capstone Experience (SCE), your independent research project could be a business plan, research of a company or industry, or something else that interests you. Funding is available to support capstone research.

Business today is global, and our program offers many opportunities for global learning, from semester-long programs to short-term courses led by our faculty, to international internships. Business-school partner institutions are located across the globe, from China to England to Argentina. Short-term study abroad programs are designed by business faculty so you complete coursework while being immersed in another culture. Significant funding is available to support student opportunities. The business management major is flexible, so studying abroad, double majoring, or picking up a minor is possible. Business management faculty are dedicated to innovative teaching, offering special topics courses, and providing other experiential opportunities for students. “There was room to make your dreams a reality at Washington College because there was so much space for you to grow. There was so much space for you to step into leadership. So much space for you and support for you to create the things that you want and be the change you want to see happen.”
