Brown Advisory Student-Managed Investment Fund
The Brown Advisory Student-Managed Investment Fund Program offers a unique opportunity for students to develop and utilize their investment skills by providing real-life investing experience. The program oversees a student-managed fund exceeding $2 million in equities.
Students participating in the program have front-line responsibility for researching, recommending, and executing equity trades. The program includes field trips to finance markets and conferences, extensive interaction with mentors in the field, and ongoing research and learning opportunities that help prepare motivated, talented students for careers in the investment field. The investment program is open to all majors who are interested in gaining knowledge of the real investment world or planning to work in the finance industry after graduation.
Students participating in the Brown program are enrolled in BUS 250 Portfolio Management, a one-credit course that meets once a week. Students enrolled in the course oversee individual stocks, can be appointed as senior analysts to oversee sectors, and can co-manage the portfolio. Class times are used discussing the portfolio with student-lead presentations suggesting whether stocks should be bought, held, or sold.
Bloomberg Terminal
Washington College students get hands-on experience with our Bloomberg Terminal, a tool most large financial industry companies use which compiles and interprets data from analysts and journalists around the clock. This powerful tool gives our students an employment edge.
Bloomberg Market Concepts
Our students have access to Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) certification, an 8-hour self-paced online course providing a visual introduction to the financial markets. BMC consists of our models — economics, currencies, fixed income, and equities — woven together from Bloomberg data, news, analystics, and television, according to the Bloomberg Institute.
Brown Advisory Investing Lab
A redesigned classroom in Daly Hall, the Brown Advisory Investing Lab is where all the action happens. The portfolio management course meets there, and it houses our Bloomberg Terminal. The room's nesting tables and executive chairs allow for a varity of room configurations while giving a board room feel.
Program history
The Brown Advisory Student-Managed Investment Fund began at Washington College in 2006 as the Alex. Brown Student Investment Program thanks to a gift from W. James Price IV H'90 P'80 and his wife Midge. Price was a partner and managing director of Alex. Brown & Sons, the oldest investment banking firm in the country, until his retirement in 1996.
Price funded the program at Washington to give our students an edge in launching careers in finance. When it began, the fund was worth $500,000.
