Homecoming Weekend 2025!

Fall Family Weekend is a time for students, families, alumni, faculty, staff, and the local community to come together and enjoy events all over campus and Chestertown. Let’s look at how Homecoming has been celebrated in the past.

Back when Washington College had a football team, Homecoming took on a more traditional
vibe with a football game, sometimes accompanied by a prank halftime show, during
the day and a formal dance in the evening. Soon bonfires, homecoming courts, and concerts
were added.

Fraternities celebrated with their own traditions: they created themed Homecoming
floats and in the 1950s established an Interfraternity Homecoming Decorations Cup.
At that time, the Fraternity houses were located along Washington Avenue, giving everyone
in town a chance to enjoy these large-scale decorations.

In the 1960s Washington College hosted several concerts, usually held at the Armory, by African American artists, including The Drifters and The Shirelles.
Homecoming started to wane at the end of the seventies and into the eighties. Soon
the parades and floats stopped, and the courts became a thing of the past; all the
celebrations seen as a chore more than a true source of excitement. But Homecoming
has always been centered around the alumni, which is one of Washington College’s strongest
assets. While some of the pomp may have gone away, the enthusiasm for the College
and the community has meant that Homecoming will always be celebrated.

There are so many events to enjoy this wonderful fall weekend, from tailgates to games
to 25th reunions, and there is something for everyone. So, take some photos, meet some alumni,
and make some memories.
