Student Opportunities
As a sociology major, you will have the flexibility to take courses that interest you. In your time here, you will explore your interests inside and outside the classroom, taking a deeper dive into areas that you find compelling, understanding the world around you, and earning leadership roles in the organizations that matter. Here are just some of the opportunities to build your skillset, and your résumé, at Washington College.
Find the Perfect Opportunity

Internships
- Take advantage of established internship opportunities with local organizations during the semester or over the summer. Internships have led to job offers following graduation. Partners include the Kent Family Center, Minary's Dream Alliance, the Kent County Local Management Board, Rebuilding Together Kent County, and the Kent County Adult Day Care.
- Contribute to state and local partners through working on grant-funded research as an intern for the Washington College Geospatial Innovation Program.
- Pursue internships over the summer in parts of the country where you want to be. Sociology faculty will help you find internships in your hometown or elsewhere.
- Participate in a civic engagement course to understand your role and impact at your internship placement, articulate your experience for professional use on your résumé or cover letter, and hear other students' perspectives on their internships.
- Arrange your own internship experience through your own connections, or by tapping into the Center for Career Development's extensive network.

Research
- Assist faculty with their research through data collection and analysis.
- Present at regional and national conferences, including the Eastern Sociological Society, the Association of Applied and Clinical Sociology, and the Southern Sociological Society.
- Complete a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE) under the supervision of a faculty advisor. SCE projects can be a traditional empirical research paper, collecting new data or using existing data; policy analysis; a media production, including a video or podcast; or a service-learning project, partnering with a local organization to collect information and design programming.
- Create your own research project. Support, financial or otherwise, is available across campus, including through the Hodson Collaborative Research Program or the Cater Society for Junior Fellows.
