Student Opportunities
When you major in chemistry, you explore your interests inside and outside the classroom, taking a deeper dive into areas that interest you, answering questions that fascinate, and earning leadership roles in organizations that matter. Here are just some of the opportunities to build your skillset, and your résumé, at Washington College.
Find the Perfect Opportunity

Internships
- Work with faculty as interns on research projects.
- Participate in internships both on and off campus.
- Arrange your own internship experience through your own connections, or by tapping into the Center for Career Development’s extensive network.

Research
- Get into the lab as soon as your first year. Nearly every course has a lab component, so in your time here you’ll familiarize yourself with laboratory instrumentation.
- Complete a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE), a year-long laboratory or literature-based project completed in your senior year. The SCE allows you to pursue a topic that interests you from beginning to end. The SCE will give you a leg up on both graduate school and job applications.
- Work one-on-one with faculty in their research. You can co-author scientific papers with faculty.
- Take advantage of partnerships with local labs like LaMotte Company, a manufacturer of water quality testing products located in Chestertown.
- Create your own research project. Support, financial or otherwise, is available across campus, including through the John S. Toll Research Program or the Cater Society for Junior Fellows.
