Departmental Funding and Awards
Funding is available to help our students pursue internships, research, participate in experiental learning opportunities, and more. Our awards recognize the collegiate work of our most outstanding students.
Funding
Washington College is committed to supporting its students in pursuing experiential learning opportunities, including through providing sources of funding. You can view information about funding for research that is open to students across majors on the Research Opportunities page, and information below relates to opportunities specifically within the Department of Business Management.
The Warehime Fund for Student Excellence in Business
With the advent of a major gift from alumna Beth Warehime ’13 and her family foundation, the Department of Business Management established the Warehime Fund for Student Excellence in Business to take our student successes to new heights. With the competitive grant funding available via the Warehime Fund, individual and group student participation in practitioner and scholarly activities will be leveraged through dedicated financial support, unlocking a new era in student engagement, innovation, and creativity beyond the classroom.
A wide variety of proposals will be considered. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Advanced research techniques in Senior Capstone Experiences, such as performing primary research through surveys or interviews, traveling off-campus to learn first-hand about firms being studied or business techniques being recommended, and using analytical tools on research databases.
- Establishment of Warehime Fellows, students working closely with faculty mentors to produce high-quality academic research, with the aim of submitting their final products for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Applications for this type of funding need to be approved by the faculty mentor that the student plans to work with.
- Participation in both academic and practitioner conferences to present their research, network with professionals, and increase their knowledge of the latest in business theory and practice.
- Participation in case competitions.
- Participation in experiential-learning focused activities, such as Enactus team summits and national competitions.
- Pursuit of entrepreneurial projects outside of their Senior Capstone projects.
William B. Johnson '40 Business Internship Awards
The William B. Johnson ’40 Business Internship Awards fund summer internships for students interested in careers in business. The Johnson program is funded by the family of William B. Johnson ’40, in recognition of his many accomplishments as a business leader and family man. Any student intent on pursuing a career in business, irrespective of major, may apply for a Johnson Award for a summer internship to learn more about business and to strengthen relations between business and the College. Assistance in obtaining an internship may be provided by the Department of Business Management. Recipients are selected based on scholarship, service, and character, as well as the proposed internship.
Awards
In addition to funding sources that support students while they are students of the
Department of Business Management, the department also selects graduating seniors
for a number of awards.
The Allender Family Scholarship
In 2023 The Allender Family established funds at both Washington College and Loyola. The purpose of the funds is to provide a merit-based scholarship to a rising Washington College senior who intends to pursue a Master of Accounting (MAcc) at Loyola. Funds at Loyola will provide for a merit-based fellowship, for the selected Washington College graduate, to pursue a MAcc. The student must be an academically outstanding accounting minor and interested in pursuing a master’s in accounting.
