Kathleen Maleski ’14 spent her summer participating in and studying outreach and working with the Condensed Matter Theory group.

“This experience has given me a chance to see the world of a grad student, and has helped me further develop as a woman in science,” said Maleski.

She interned at Penn State this summer as a research intern with the physics department and the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). Throughout the internship, Maleski participated in outreach activities such as teaching kids about science and giving out liquid nitrogen ice cream. She also took a trip to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to learn how they use exhibits to teach science to the public. Maleski also worked in the Condensed Matter Theory group, where she studied defects in nanocarbon structures such as graphene.
