Black Chokeberry

    Aronia, or black chokeberry, is a native shrub and is edible, a nectary, windscreen, and wildlife shelter.

    Scientific Name: Aronia melanocarpa
    Common Name: Black Chokeberry
    Plant Family: Rosaceae

    Etymology: Aronia is derived from the Greek word "aria," which was a plant that had similar fruits.  The specific epithet melanocarpa means black fruit.

    Black Chokeberry is planted in the food forest at Conquest Preserve as part of the Natural Lands Project  at Washington College's Center for Environment & Society.
