Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
The Department of Mathematics & Computer Science is one of the oldest at Washington College. Our department puts a strong emphasis on problem solving and communication skills—including writing and presenting. Courses provide students with the foundational technical skills that will serve them not only during their time at Washington, but as they pursue their career goals.
Our faculty provide learning opportunities inside the classroom and through collaborative
undergraduate research opportunities.
The department offers majors and minors in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Data Science, as well as interdisciplinary minors in Information Systems and Data Analytics. The majors offered by our department pair well with other disciplines for students interested in multiple areas of academic study. The department also contributes classes for the first-year seminar (FYS) program, distribution courses, introductory level courses, and diverse upper-level courses for majors. Class size is close to 20 in the lower levels, and an upper-level class may contain as few as seven students, allowing for a focused experience.
