Self Defense and Safety
Would you like to learn realistic self-defense techniques and increase your overall safety awareness? Our Self Defense and Safety program will introduce basic self-defense techniques and emphasize common sense approaches to safety on campus. Information will be presented through lecture, discussion, and hands-on learning. You do not need to be a martial arts expert to learn these techniques. We will also conduct a workshop on bystander intervention that will teach participants how to safely intervene to possibly prevent sexual and relationship violence and stalking.
Monday
After getting to know each other a bit, students will be involved in a discussion of risk-reduction strategies, defensive strategies, and the basic principles of defense. We will then begin the process of hands-on training. We will discuss the pros and cons of defensive weaponry, how to develop a defensive mindset, understanding offensive, and defensive postures, recognizing vulnerable locations and utilizing personal weapons. Students should wear non-restrictive clothing for all three days.
Tuesday
On day two, students will continue the process of hands-on training. The techniques utilized are based on simple gross motor skills and are developed to the point that they become instinctual through repetition. Students will have the opportunity to use these techniques in dynamic impact training by striking padded equipment held by the instructors. In other words, you get to punch stuff!
Wednesday
We will continue to hone our self-defense techniques. Those who are interested will be able to utilize these techniques as we work through several different scenarios.
