The FOML support and advocate for the library's goals to stimulate and enrich the intellectual life of Washington College and its surrounding community.

FOML seek to accomplish the following:

• Acquaint the greater community with the Library and its resources
• Supplement the library’s resources
• Host and coordinate library-related events and programs
• Develop the library’s Maryland Collection
• Develop a full collection of Sophie Kerr’s works
• Sponsor the Ralph Thornton '40 Research Prize
• Organize semiannual book sales
• Sponsor annual literary events such as readings and receptions
• Enhance special collections
