Isaac Mason comes to Miller Library

Just before the holidays, the Archives & Special Collections acquired a very special book, The Life of Issac Mason as a Slave.
This acquisition was possible with a generous and quick donation made by the Women’s
League of Washington College. Isaac Mason freed himself from slavery, escaping from
Chestertown into Pennsylvania and finally to Massachusetts. Mason used his voice and his story for the abolition movement and
became a community leader. He has inspired many with the story of his life, especially
here in Kent County.
The first edition has had a long life, having been deaccessioned from Fisk University,
Tennessee's first HBCU. Our next steps will be to conserve the book so future generations
of Washington College students can learn about this extraordinary man who was able
to share his story, especially since so many of those enslaved and escaping enslavement
have been lost to time.
On February 19th, Miller Library hosted a small “unboxing” of the book with members and students of the Starr Center. You can read more about it and watch the video here.
