As the weather starts to cool and we move deeper into the semester, what better way to enjoy this time than by biting into a homemade cookie?

George Washington never enjoyed cookies as we know them today. Gingerbread and hard tac were the closest he got. In the Martha Washington Cook Book, small cakes and biscuits are the closest we get to cookies. Here is a recipe for Cracknells.

Trumpington Manor, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, has been occupied by the family for centuries. Their recipe for Ladies Crunchy Chocolate Biscuits is printed in the Washington College Cookbook from 1997.

Laura's Cookies

That same cookbook has some easy no-bake treats, Laura’s Cookies. This recipe requires melting chocolate chips, which can be done in a microwave, so they are great for dorm snacks.

For those with food sensitivities, here is a recipe for Sweet Potato Chocolate Chip Cookies from Lickin’ the Beaters 2, a vegan cookbook.

Toll House cookiesBut sometimes you can’t beat a classic, and the 1970 Washington College CookBook  knew that well! Here is the ever-popular Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. We made ours without walnuts.

Stop by the library and give some of these a try for as long as they are available. And if you miss some home cooking, check out some of the other cookbooks in the collection for ideas.
