Former Washington Tennis Star Coaches Team to French Open Championship
Former Washington College tennis player Dave Marshall ’88 recently returned to the French Open to coach the French player Édouard Roger-Vasselin and his mixed doubles partner Laura Siegemund this June.
The duo, thanks to Marshall’s keen coaching, fought a fiercely contested final to
take the trophy against two-time Wimbledon-winning duo, Desirae Krawczyk and Neal
Skupski, winning the final 6-4, 7-5.
“It was very touch and go,” said Marshall of the match. “But winning on a stadium
court, in front of a packed house, with Édouard as the last Frenchman standing in
the tournament was huge.”
Marshall is no stranger to coaching at the world’s top championships. Last fall, Marshall
and Ross Coleman ’87, former Washington College tennis teammates and close friends,
coached their doubles teams on side-by-side courts at the U.S. Open. Now, with his
player Roger-Vasselin making the French Olympic team and qualifying for the Davis
Cup for the first time, Marshall is staying busy.
“It’s been a big year for him,” said the proud coach, noting they had a lot of work
ahead of them.
Preparing for Wimbledon is next for Marshall, already a multiple Grand Slam champion
coach with wins at the hallowed British tournament, as well as at the U.S. Open and
Australian Open. Among his many accolades, Marshall is known internationally as co-coach
of the Bryans Brothers and is credited with helping them to regain the world’s #1
ranking. The Tennis Channel has called Marshall “one of the best coaches in the business.”
