Favorite Professors
Both the Biology and Chemistry Departments made a huge impact on my career. All of
these professors not only taught me the sciences, but how to study and master material
to prepare me for the rigorous training in medical school. Dr. K, Dr. Verville, and
Dr. Amick were some of the very best professors I have ever had the privilege of learning
from.
The theater department also had a huge impact on my time during Washington College.
While I was not a major, or even a minor for that matter, they accepted me as part
of their family. I loved spending time on stage and behind the scenes.
Finally, Dr. Olsen's literature classes were some of the best classes I have ever
taken. Learning how to think, anaylze, and understand literature was a profound skill
that I still appreciate.
Let’s Hear It for the Liberal Arts
Like most Washington College students, my resume after graduation was all over the
place. I was a biology major who enjoyed being a part of several research projects,
I played field hockey all 4 years, I was involved in theater, I studied abroad in
Ireland, and I was able to take many classes outside of my major that enriched and
deepened my education. I decided to pursue medicine after shadowing an orthopedic
surgeon in Chestertown. Washington College gave me the opportunity to learn how to
think, grow as a person, and allowed for opportunities that would prepare me to take
care of patients as a physician. Becoming a doctor is a long journey, but the way
Washington College fosters a true liberal arts education gave me so many vaulable
tools that prepared me for medical school, residency, and finally serving my community
as an OBGYN.
