Having moved around a lot throughout the course of their life, Jo got to experience a wide range of environments as a child.

It was interesting to see how different places grew different plants and had different squirrels, birds, and other species! Summer camp was formative for developing their love of nature. After spending a few summers as a camper, Jo started to give back to their camp community as a counselor and later as a nature coordinator. Through that position Jo wrote new curriculums and implemented them, finding a lot of joy in teaching others.  

Here at Washington College, Jo shares their enthusiasm for gardening and birds with other students and community members as President of the Campus Garden Club, and has even taught a WC-ALL course! The project that they’re always very excited about is the addition of chickens to the garden! Chickens are the ultimate permaculture poultry and add a lot of ecological value and interest to the garden. Now after two years, the chickens have added a vibrancy to the garden that many students share in!
