On Being a French Major
I arrived at Washington College knowing that I would be a French major, but not what I would be able to do with my French major. I found the professors in the French department at Washington College to be extremely knowledge, helpful, and encouraging throughout my four years studying there. I was not only able to improve my French skills on campus but I was given many opportunities to do so off campus.
During my fall semester junior year, I studied French film, literature and Provencal language at L’université de Provence, Aix-Marseille I. It was one of the best experiences I had. Though classes were cancelled most of the semester due to strikes, I was able to experience French culture first hand. It gave me the opportunity to see so many cities in the south of France and meet so many great people from around Europe. I left France with the knowledge that I would return in the future.
The semester after my study abroad, I started in the Education department. I had decided that being a French teacher would be in my future. Through both the French and Education departments, I learned of the opportunity to go back to France at the end of my four years as a teacher. My senior year, I applied to be the lectrice d’anglais at L’université d’Artois in Arras, France for the following year.
Currently, I am living in Arras and working as a lectrice. I am in charge of the oral expression classes for French majors as well as for adult students who have now decided to study English. It has been a wonderful experience teaching my native language and American culture to French students. It is so different than teaching at an American high school as I did for my student teaching. I am grateful to Washington College for giving me the opportunity to work in the French school system and have such an amazing experience
Choosing to study French at Washington College was a decision I will never regret. I have been given such wonderful opportunities thanks to the faculty and everything I have been able to experience through the college will stay with me and help me as I return to the states to find a teaching job.
