About Humanities

Art, music, history, and literature are all interrelated. Why should you have to choose just one to study?

The humanities major is an interdisciplinary major, tailored to your specific interests and synthesizing material from history, art, music, drama, philosophy, world languages, English, and world literature into a single major. You can choose classes that reflect your interests, and write a thesis on something you’re passionate about.

Whether you want to compare different forms of art or examine history from multiple perspectives, the Humanities major exemplifies the true liberal arts experience, by giving you a strong background in a wide range of subjects and the freedom to investigate your own interests.

Program Features

Graduating humanities majors will be able to:

  1. Goal 1
  2. Goal 2
  3. Goal 3

The major consists of a minimum of eight courses on the 300 and 400 level in at least two, preferably three, of the following disciplines:

    • Art History
    • English
    • Foreign Languages
    • History
    • Music History
    • Philosophy
    • Theatre
    • World Literature (International Literatures and Cultures)

Please be sure to take the necessary introductory courses prior to that and check the prerequisites for upper-level courses. These upper-level courses may not double-count for other majors or minors. The humanities major requires a distinct focus and careful planning, and regular contact with the director and affiliated professors is essential.
