Dr. Cole’s educational philosophy focuses on fostering intentional student engagement in co-curricular work that enhances the liberal arts curriculum.
In his post at Washington College, he manages the student affairs staff and oversees all aspects of student life, including the dean of students office, public safety, student engagement, career development, community service, drug and alcohol education, Greek life, health & counseling services, intercultural affairs, residential life and student conduct.
A native of Mississippi, Cole earned a bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Mississippi and a master’s degree, again in history, from Miami University (OH). He earned his doctor of education degree in higher-education management from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Washington College, Dr. Cole served 19 years in roles of increasing responsibility at Loyola University Maryland from Assistant Director of Student Life and Associate Dean of Students to his most recent role of Assistant Vice President for Student Development.
When not managing student affairs, he has also found time for music, playing trombone locally in the Washington College Jazz Ensemble and regionally in Moodswings Big Band. Dr. Cole is married to Dr. Susanne DeBerry Cole, a lecturer in GWR at Washington College and Executive Director of the Historical Society of Kent County. Their Cairn Terrier, “Mingus” keeps their lives joyful.
