Brittany Minturn

Class of 2008
Major/Minor: Sociology

After graduation, I moved to Baltimore and started working for an international non-profit called Best Buddies. Best Buddies is an organization that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. After college, I had no idea what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to find a job that was challenging, fun, where every day was different and a place where I felt like I was making a difference. I was hired as the Best Buddies MD/DC College Program Manager in September 2008 and have been working here ever since. I currently work with 18 college in MD and Washington, DC. Most of my days are spent traveling to these schools, training members and communicating with their student leaders, advisors and the agencies that they are paired with.

By majoring in Sociology, it gave me a unique view of people, situations, and social interactions and has helped me to adapt to all kinds of different situations. That knowledge has been essential to my profession and I am thankful to the sociology major for that insight.

I am also currently researching graduate schools for the 2011-2012 school year and plan to get my graduate degree in school counseling.

My senior thesis was probably the most daunting task during my four years at Washington College. Thankfully, having Dr. Anderson as an advisor made this project seem not quite as bad. Her support and guidance was so helpful. Looking back, it was an experience that I learned a lot from and I am happy to say that I achieved.

I think I changed my major four times in my first two years at Washington College until I finally decided to declare in Sociology and I am so glad that I did! The classes that I took, experiences I had, and people I met through the sociology department could not have been more beneficial to me and the person I am today. I could not have imagined myself getting more out of any other major.
